Mellom

Mellom was founded by dr. Derek Jan Fikkers. He has a broad experience with solutions to strategic challenges in higher education and innovation policy, and has worked for universities and public authorities. Examples of recent experience include:

University of twente

Leadership of the 60-person Strategy & Policy team. Director of Strategy of the university, ensuring the university's strategic positioning, managing key stakeholder relations, driving transformation initiatives, optimising planning processes, and integrating business intelligence for future-proof decision-making.

European commisson

Set-up & Co-leadership of the EC’s Service Facility for Strategic International R&D Cooperation. The Service Facility helped the European Commission manage its science, technology & innovation relations with non-EU countries. It consists of 50+ leading universities and consultancies.

Universities of the Netherlands

Day-to-day management of the strategy process of the 14 Dutch universities. This resulted in the joint higher education strategy “Kiezen voor Kwaliteit in 2040”, which was unanimously accepted by the boards of all universities in 2023.

Belgian universities

Setting up a joint Open Science Board for five Belgian Universities. Setting up the first integral Flemish Open Science Strategy and developing a support structure for implementation. This included initiating a joint governance structure, promoting Research Data Management skills (RDM) and ensuring that Flemish universities and research organisations are fully aligned with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

Government of Ireland

Development of market-focused research centres in Ireland. The Higher Education Association and the Science Foundation Ireland aspire to an internationally competitive market-focussed research centre landscape in Ireland. We helped them with a series of roadmaps that included assessments of gaps and opportunities and building on the existing landscape to ensure an. This has resulted in a Roadmap that feeds into Ireland's new research strategy.
